Title New Access to Information laws in Germany - a big bang for Computer-Assisted Reporting (CAR)?
Year 2007
Access date 31.05.2007
Abstract

Internet serves nowadays not only market and social researchers but also journalists as medium, means and method. Online-Research (empirical market and social research with or over Internet) links to the another discipline which is called Online-Research or Online-Reporting. That is the systematic journalistic search by means of or over Internet. Known also as CAR (Computer Assisted Reporting), it has considerable successes to show. In this panel the journalistic, legal and network-theoretical framework for on-line search is to be marked out.

Manfred Redelfs (Greenpeace Germany Research Unit) addresses the legal framework: With the passing of a Freedom of Information Act (Informationsfreiheitsgesetz) in 2005, better access was granted to data from the executive branch, and new opportunities for CAR were created. Redelfs was involved as an expert in the legislative process in Berlin.
